Back-to-School Dental Checkups: Why Timing Matters
Back-to-school season means new routines, packed lunches, sports, activities and busy family schedules. Between shopping for supplies and getting everyone out the door on time, a dental appointment may not be at the top of the checklist.
But the start of a new school year is actually a great time to make sure your child’s smile is ready for the months ahead.

Catch Small Problems Before They Become Big Ones
One of the biggest benefits of back-to-school dental checkups is early detection. Cavities and other dental problems don’t always hurt when they first develop. Regular exams give your dentist an opportunity to identify concerns before they become more complicated. (Canadian Dental Association)
That matters during the school year. Untreated tooth decay can lead to pain and infection and can affect a child’s sleep, eating and ability to learn. (Canada)
A checkup early in the school year can help address potential problems before they turn into a toothache during class, an unexpected absence or an urgent dental visit.
A Lot Can Change in a Growing Mouth
Children’s mouths change quickly.
Permanent teeth typically begin appearing around age six, with baby teeth gradually replaced through the early teen years. (Canada) A dental visit gives us an opportunity to check how those new teeth are coming in and monitor your child’s overall dental development.
Once permanent molars appear, your dentist may also recommend dental sealants. Sealants cover the grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces of certain teeth, helping prevent food from becoming trapped and reducing the risk of cavities. (Canada)

Back-to-School Dental Checkups: Reset Those Everyday Habits
Summer can mean later bedtimes, vacations, more snacking and routines that are a little less structured.
The return to school provides a natural opportunity to get oral-health habits back on track.
School-aged children should be brushing all surfaces of their teeth twice a day for at least two minutes with fluoridated toothpaste and cleaning between their teeth every day. Even as children become more independent, they may still benefit from reminders and supervision. (Canada)
It's also a good time to look at what goes into the lunchbox. Water instead of sugary drinks and snacks such as apples, cheese, plain yogurt and raw vegetables can all be part of a tooth-friendly school routine. (Canada)
Don't Forget About Sports
If your child is heading back to hockey, soccer, basketball or another sport, mention it during their dental visit.
A properly fitted mouthguard can help protect the teeth and mouth from injury. And as children grow — and lose baby teeth and gain permanent ones — the fit of an existing mouthguard can change.
Think of it as another piece of equipment to check before the season gets underway.
Does Every Child Need a Checkup Every Six Months?
Not necessarily.
The Canadian Dental Association notes that six-month dental exams are appropriate for many children, but how often someone should visit depends on their individual oral-health needs. Your dentist may recommend appointments more or less frequently depending on factors such as cavity history, oral hygiene and other dental concerns. (Canadian Dental Association)
The important thing is not to wait until something hurts.
