Who is Eligible for Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
If you're a Canadian resident, with a household income under $90,000 and don’t have access to private dental insurance, you may be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP). This applies across all age groups:
Children under 18,
Seniors aged 65 and over, and
Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate (CMHA National).
As of May 2025, the CDCP also expanded to include uninsured adults aged 18–64; coverage begins as early as June 1 (CDCP Dental Plan).
How to Apply
Confirm Eligibility: Ensure you meet the key criteria: no private insurance, adjusted family income under $90,000, residency status, and having filed taxes (parents must file for children under 18) (CMHA National).
Gather Documents: You’ll need your Social Insurance Number (if applicable), date of birth, address, notice of assessment (tax return), and confirmation of no private dental coverage (Canada.ca).
Submit Your Application: Apply online via the Government of Canada portal or by phone. You can apply for multiple family members in one session (123Dentist).
Approval & Welcome Package: Once approved, Sun Life will send a package with your CDCP member card, coverage details, and start date for treatment (CDCP Dental Plan).

What’s Covered—and What’s Not
If approved, you'll gain access to essential dental services, including:
Cleanings, exams & X‑rays
Fillings, root canals, extractions
Periodontal care and dentures
Other oral surgery and preventive treatments (123Dentist, 4th Floor Dental)
The CDCP uses a sliding scale based on income:
Under $70,000 – 100% coverage
$70,000–$79,999 – 60% coverage (you pay 40%)
$80,000–$89,999 – 40% coverage (you pay 60%) (Canadian Dental Association)
Note: Cosmetic treatments—like whitening, implants, mouthguards—are not included.

Why It Matters
From routine cleanings for children that set the stage for lifelong oral health to meaningful care for seniors on fixed incomes, the CDCP removes financial barriers to dental treatment. A healthier smile starts with accessible care.
