What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and Who Qualifies?

Access to dental care is an important part of overall health, but for many Canadians the cost of treatment can make regular visits difficult. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) was introduced by the federal government to help more Canadians receive essential dental services by reducing financial barriers to care.

What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program designed to help eligible Canadians access dental care when they do not have private dental insurance. The plan provides partial or full coverage for a range of essential dental treatments depending on household income.

The goal of the program is simple: to improve oral health across Canada by ensuring that more people can receive preventive care and necessary treatment.

The plan is administered by Health Canada and benefits are delivered through Sun Life, which manages enrollment and claim processing.

Who Qualifies for the CDCP?

To be eligible for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, applicants must meet four main criteria:

No Access to Dental Insurance

You must not have dental coverage through:

  • An employer or workplace benefit plan

  • A private insurance policy

  • A family member’s insurance plan

Household Income Under $90,000

Eligibility depends on your adjusted family net income as reported on your tax return.

Generally:

  • Under $70,000: Higher coverage levels

  • $70,000–$79,999: Partial coverage

  • $80,000–$89,999: Lower coverage levels

Canadian Residency

You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes.

Filed a Recent Tax Return

You must have filed your tax return for the previous year so eligibility can be confirmed.

Who Can Apply Now?

The CDCP is being rolled out gradually to different age groups and populations across Canada.

Groups currently eligible or being phased in include:

  • Seniors aged 65 and older

  • Children under 18

  • Adults with a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate

  • Other eligible adults based on rollout timelines

If you are unsure whether your application window is open, you can check eligibility through the Government of Canada website.

What Dental Services May Be Covered?

The Canadian Dental Care Plan focuses primarily on preventive and essential dental care, which may include:

  • Dental exams and consultations

  • Professional cleanings and scaling

  • X-rays

  • Fluoride treatments

  • Fillings for cavities

  • Root canal treatment

  • Tooth extractions

  • Some restorative procedures

Certain treatments may require preauthorization before coverage is approved.

It is important to remember that the CDCP may not always cover the full cost of treatment, depending on your income level and the specific procedure.

How the CDCP Works at Your Dental Appointment

If you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan and have received confirmation of coverage, the process is straightforward.

When visiting a CDCP dentist in Brampton, you will typically:

  1. Bring your CDCP information or coverage confirmation.

  2. The dental office submits claims through the CDCP administrator.

  3. The program pays its portion directly to the dental provider.

  4. You may be responsible for any remaining balance depending on your coverage level.

Why Preventive Dental Care Still Matters

Programs like the CDCP are designed to help Canadians access care earlier, before small issues become larger problems.

Regular dental visits can help detect and prevent:

  • Tooth decay

  • Gum disease

  • Oral infections

  • Tooth loss

  • Chronic inflammation that can affect overall health

Even with coverage, maintaining good oral hygiene at home and attending routine checkups remains the best way to protect your smile.
